Eight Commander Staples for Pocket Change

Eight of the most-played cards in Commander that were sitting in our singles binder, most of them for under a dollar.

Sun Titan, art by Todd Lockwood

EDHREC keeps a running count of which cards show up in the Commander decks people post online. Scroll through the top of that list and you'll notice how few of the cards are flashy. It's mostly lands, removal and a few creatures that do the same useful thing every turn.

We took that list to our singles binder to see what we had. These eight were all in stock when we wrote this, and six of them were under a dollar. The prices and Add buttons below are pulled live from the shop, so if a card's sold you'll see that too.

Chaos Warp

Red can burn a creature. It has a much harder time with an enchantment, or with a commander that keeps getting recast. Chaos Warp handles both. For three mana at instant speed, it shuffles any permanent into its owner's library. They flip their top card afterward and get to keep it if it's a permanent, and sometimes that backfires on you. It's still better than losing to the thing you just shuffled away.

EDHREC has this in its top 100. If you're playing red, we'd put it in before almost anything else.

Sun Titan

Six mana for a 6/6 with vigilance. When it enters, and again each time it attacks, you return a permanent with mana value 3 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield. People bring back fetch lands, mana rocks, cheap removal on a creature, whatever got destroyed last turn. If nobody deals with the Titan for a couple of turns, you'll have most of your board back.

Austere Command

Most board wipes hit you as hard as everyone else. This one gives you four options and you pick two: destroy all artifacts, all enchantments, all creatures with mana value 3 or less, or all creatures with mana value 4 or more. So a deck full of big creatures can clear out the small stuff and the artifacts and keep its own board. It costs six, which is a turn later than most wipes.

Exotic Orchard

Taps for any color that a land an opponent controls could produce. One-on-one, that's unreliable. With three opponents, someone almost always has lands in your colors, and then this is an untapped land that makes what you need and doesn't cost life. It's in EDHREC's top 100 too. Any deck with two or more colors should have one.

Supreme Verdict

Four mana, destroy all creatures, can't be countered. That last part is why people pay more for it than for other four-mana wipes. The player with the biggest board is usually the one who kept a counterspell back to protect it. Ours is the foil from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set, so the art is a bit different from what you're used to.

Rampaging Baloths

A 6/6 trampler with landfall: every time a land enters under your control, you get a 4/4 Beast token. Just making your normal land drop gets you one a turn. Green decks tend to play two or three lands a turn once they're going, and that gets out of hand quickly.

Ghalta, Primal Hunger

A 12/12 with trample that says it costs twelve mana. You'll rarely pay that, because it costs X less where X is the total power of your creatures. Two or three midsize creatures on the table and Ghalta comes down for two green. It's legendary, so you can run it as your commander. That deck is just green creatures with high power, and it's a fun one to hand to a newer player.

Sevinne's Reclamation

Three mana, return a permanent with mana value 3 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield. It has flashback for five, and when you cast it that way you can copy it, so the second use brings back two things. It does what Sun Titan does, as a sorcery, and plenty of white decks run both.

The rest of them

We tag any single that appears on EDHREC's most-played lists. This is what's on the shelf from those lists today.

If you're shopping for one deck in particular, go to the singles page, open the Color filter and switch on Fits my commander's colors. Pick your commander's colors and everything it can't legally play disappears.

EDHREC rankings are as of October 2026 and they move around. We're not telling you what any card will be worth later.
